About La DivaMoff!
In the Key of A Minor...
A powerhouse mezzo belter, Christiana Moffa hails from Columbus, Ohio, where she grew up with three life goals: 1) To be Annie on Broadway; 2) To be a senator who stages the first-ever “singing filibuster”; and 3) To win a Tony Award by the age of 30.
So… NONE of that happened!
But that’s okay, because the path she ended up taking has still provided a myriad opportunities to keep up and expand her vocal and performance talents whilst also growing a successful career in retail real estate. This began in the late 1990s when, in Chicago, the chance arose to record the debut Cabaret Series album for Southport Records. It was entitled “Can’t Help Singin’”, an compilation of Broadway and Big Band covers, and it was released in 1998 with Ms. Moffa as sole vocalist and co-producer along with renowned local musicians-Pianist Bobby Schiff, Bassist Jim Cox and Percussionist Phil Grateau. Shortly after its premier at Toulouse on the Park, the once-famed Chi-Town lounge by the lake, the show hit the road with an exclusive performance at Eighty-Eights in New York City. Upon its conclusion, Cabaret Scenes magazine published a review hailing this Native Ohioan singer “a voice the likes of Lea Salonga and Liza Callaway.”
Thus began Ms. Moffa’s love of cabaret, as she performed in various hot spots around Chicago, including several gigs at the noted Pops for Champagne jazz bar.
After relocating to Los Angeles with her employer, Christiana eventually was approached about recording some Standard Era hits with an independent production company. In 2008, a single track from that session was released by the singer, on her own, although it has never been formally published. You’ll find the track, A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square, on this very page! From that point, Broadway lightning struck and the Academy for New Musical Theater (now called New Musicals Inc.) in Hollywood found a spot for the aspiring belter in their company, which held workshops and showcases as well as readings and stagings of original books and scores by local writers and composers. One particular show, The Angel of Painted Post, featured Ms. Moffa in a leading role and was later submitted to the ASCAP/Stephen Schwartz Workshop, where it was a finalist.
Also while in LA, Christiana had a chance encounter - through business dealings - with the Business Manager for David Bowie and Sting. Having also managed the combined George and Ira Gershwin estate for some years, said manager had been introduced to her “Can’t Help Singin’” in a review of estate-licensed and recorded songs. He told Ms. Moffa that he had proclaimed her cover of Someone to Watch Over Me the “most angelic version and voice [he’s] ever heard.” This has been the greatest compliment of her life, hands-down!
Career shifts then led to Atlantic City, New Jersey, where performing in any capacity took a back-seat to work for the better part of three years. At the end of her East Coast stint, however, Christiana returned to her hometown of Columbus to be close to her family. As it turns out, the arts and music scene had exploded so the timing was ideal! Since being home, Ms. Moffa has assumed roles on governing boards for Short North Stage and MusicColumbus, organizations essential to the evolution of professional theater and music development/artistic support in and around the capital city. And although she has not yet resumed performing, just yet, never say NEVER! The connections made across the years and within such talented communities always present new chances… so keep your eyes out and your ears in tune!
Christiana Moffa has received training from Joyce Stonebraker, Karrie Horton (Westerville, OH) and Lynn Roseberry (Capital University, Columbus, OH); Janet Fritsch (Cincinnati Conservatory of Music), Jillann Gabrielle and Ed Ferran (Chicago, IL); and Joshua Finkel (Los Angeles).
